STAR WARS EXTRACT
Media Questions on
Star Wars
Speed and motion
The extract that we
watched included a lot of Speed and Motion. First of all the extract is based
on this very fast and dangerous pod race. It is a neck-in neck and well matched
race as-well as that the course is very dangerous and difficult to tackle at
such a high speed which adds to the Speed and motion. The pods are speeding
round these tight corners and even have to do a 90 degrees turn to be able to
get round a corner. The pods are open top so you can see the characters
reactions and emotions whilst they are racing. They are going so fast that it
turns to close-ups of parts falling off the pods. This adds a sense of danger
as-well- if the pod breaks the driver will most probably die.
Heroic Protagonist
Anakin Skywalker as a
heroic protagonist for many different reasons. Firstly he is very brave, he is
a young boy who is competing in a race that is very much so for older
competitors. This is a stereo-typical heroic protagonist. He played by the
rules and did not cheat throughout the whole race; this shows that he is fair
and is a very big quality a typical ‘Heroic Protagonist’ should include in
their character qualities. You could tell he was a much liked character as he
had the support of the crowd- this is a big factor because usually the good
people have most the support. Say for example the other competitor had the
support of the crowd you would picture him as the heroic protagonist and you
would see Anakin as the less important character.
CAMERA WORK
Tracking shots- allow
us to travel with them and be involved in the race and experience the different
angles they have to go through on the route.
Point of view shots-
put you in the scene and seat to make you realise what it is like to experience
being in an out of control machine.
Mis-en scene
Mis-e-scene is used to
create many different effects, in this extract on star wars I will be focussing
on two different ones. They will be the characters which include aliens, robots
and mechanical characters. My second of the two will be the desert-like
scenery. The scenery in the film makes us of huge rocks with cutaways winding
through them which make the race. The carvings are natural and difficult which
adds to the difficulty of the race. This also creates a sense of real danger
and suspense when they are racing. If these vehicles crash then the drivers
will both die. This adds to the effect of danger- this is very typical of an AA
film.
The Alien-like
characters are the biggest clue of the film being based on an Alien planet. The
characters make up of characters with typical alien-like features with two
heads, robots and other mechanical characters also appear. These are not the
typical creatures you would find on planet Earth. This gives interest to the
audience. It is something different to focus on and will keep their attention.
It also takes us to another world because they are so unlike the creatures we
are used to seeing. They look very authentic and
believable.
