TV FILM OPENING ANALYSIS: Zen
Zen (BBC1 2011 Sunday evenings) is an excellent example
of a crime/detective drama series whose opening efficiently establishes its
genre, locations, themes and tone right from the start. You know that it is a crime
drama because it opens with a dramatic theme tune in the background. The theme
tune is mysterious and intriguing. It also includes men dressed in
sophisticated black tie suits and their faces are covered by black sun-glasses.
The crime genre is also established through scenes such as the repeated guns
and shots of the Questura whom which are the Italian police headquarters.
Italianicity is conveyed through repeated colours that assemble the colours of
the Italian flag (red, white, green). We also receive an idea of the location
as this is established through the constant shots of the iconic Roman buildings
such as the dome of St Peters which towers over the Vatican. The building
styles are iconic to Italy.
Fiat
Cinquecento cars whom which are an Italian brand, are stacked up in parking
spaces which connotes the crowded city of Rome. The colour codes of the Italian flag
again are featured, which connotes Italy.
GOOD.
